How Soon Do I Need to Order My Habesha Kemis for My Event?
This is the question I get more than any other. Sometimes it comes weeks before the event, sometimes — and I say this with love — it comes three days before. I will be honest with you the way I would be honest with a younger sister: the sooner, the better. But let me explain exactly why, so you are not just taking my word for it.
These Dresses Are Made by Hand — Truly, Thread by Thread
Every ቀሚስ (kemis/dress) we sell is made in Ethiopia. Not assembled. Not printed. Made. The ጥልፍ (tilet/embroidery) you see along the neckline, the hem, the sleeves — that is done by hand, one thread at a time, by a skilled artisan who has spent years perfecting that craft.
For most of our dresses, at least two or three people are involved. One artisan handles the embroidery. A separate tailor cuts and sews the dress itself. Sometimes a third finishes with heat pressing and final quality checks. Our head tailor has been doing this work for over 20 years. That kind of skill does not rush.
When a customer asks me why it takes 2–4 weeks to make a custom dress, I want them to understand: that is not a delay. That is what handmade means.
So How Much Time Do You Actually Need?
Here is the honest breakdown.
Ready-to-Ship Dresses
Some of our dresses ship within 1–3 business days from Ethiopia. Shipping to the US or Canada typically takes 5–10 business days. Europe is similar, though customers there should also allow a few extra days for customs clearance — this is something outside our control, and I always tell customers not to cut it close when ordering internationally.
For ready-to-ship orders, I generally recommend placing your order at least 3 weeks before your event.
Custom and Made-to-Order Dresses
Custom orders are a different conversation. Once you place your order, the artisans begin work. The embroidery alone can take several days depending on the design — some of our more detailed pieces have dense ጥልፍ patterns that require extraordinary patience. Then there is the tailoring, the fitting adjustments, the finishing. After all that, the dress still needs to travel from Addis Ababa to your door.
For a custom habesha kemis, I recommend ordering at least 6–8 weeks before your event. If you are ordering for a ሠርግ (wedding), give yourself 8–10 weeks. Weddings have no flexibility — there is no "a little late is fine" when you are the bride or the mother of the bride.
The Events I See People Order For
Most of our customers are ordering for specific occasions — ሠርግ, graduations, ጥምቀት (Timkat), ፋሲካ (Fasika), baptisms, cultural shows, family reunions. Each one has a hard date. The dress either arrives in time or it does not.
I have had customers come to me in a panic two weeks before a wedding asking if we can rush a custom order. Sometimes we can manage. Sometimes we truly cannot — not because we do not want to, but because asking an artisan to rush embroidery work that requires steady hands and real focus is not fair to the work or to them. I would rather be honest with you upfront than promise something and disappoint you.
Shipping from Ethiopia — What to Expect
All our dresses are made in Ethiopia and shipped worldwide from there. We work with reliable carriers, but international shipping always carries some variability — especially during busy seasons like the holidays or around major Ethiopian holidays when demand spikes.
For customers in the US and Canada: plan for 5–10 business days of transit time after your dress ships.
For customers in Europe: plan for 7–14 business days, and factor in customs. Packages can sit in customs for several days without warning. It is rare that it causes a real problem, but when it does happen and the event is two days away, there is nothing anyone can do.
Order early. That is the only advice I have left to give on this. You will sleep better.
A Few Dresses to Consider for Your Event
If you are not sure where to start, here are three of our most loved styles:
My Simple Rule for Every Customer
I always tell customers: if you have found your dress, do not wait. The habesha kemis delivery time from Ethiopia is not something we can compress for you — the artisans work as quickly as quality allows, and then the dress still has to travel halfway across the world to reach you. Ordering early is the only thing that removes the stress.
If your event is 8 or more weeks away, you have time to think through the style, the customization, the sizing. If your event is 4–6 weeks away, you should order now and skip the deliberating. If your event is less than 3 weeks away, contact us first so we can tell you honestly what is available and what can ship in time.
The Ethiopian dress shipping time question always has the same answer: earlier is always right. The dress will be ready. The artisans will do their work with care. All we need is enough time to let them.
