When we design a kemis in the Axum style, we think about that ancient city and the civilization it represents: the stelae, the quiet dignity, the sense that everything there was built to last and to mean something. This is the kemis that truly represents our ancient civilization and holds the deepest cultural truth of who we are as Habesha people. The Axum kemis is 100% done by hand — every single stitch. No machine work, no shortcuts. That is also why it takes the longest to make: depending on the embroidery size and sophistication, please allow 4 to 8 weeks for delivery. It is worth the wait. Gondar, ጎንደር, was the seat of emperors, and the clothes that came out of that region have always had that same commanding presence. What sets this dress apart is the tibeb and tilet patterning along the hem, collar, and cuffs — bold, deliberate, deeply Amhara. Our head tailor, who has been stitching these patterns for over 20 years, embroiders every line hand thread by thread. No shortcuts. That kind of dedication shows the moment you hold the fabric up to the light. Between two and three artisans work on each dress, so the embroidery you see is a collective of skilled hands, not a machine. The fabric is a traditional handwoven white habesha cloth that drapes beautifully and gets softer with every wash — just follow our care instructions to keep it looking fresh for years. Where some styles go bold and decorative, the Axum kemis is refined — the patterns are structured, precise, with a geometry that feels almost architectural. Our head tailor, with more than 20 years of experience, takes particular care with the spacing and symmetry of every stitch. Two to three artisans collaborate on each piece, working hand thread by thread until the embroidery sits exactly right.
